Mang Kung Uk Village is a centuries-old Hakka indigenous village in Sai Kung, built in the early Qing Dynasty. The rest garden is located next to the bus stop and car park at the entrance of the two villages on Clear Water Bay Road—Mang Kung Uk Village and Wai Sum Tsuen. A rain pavilion was built on the same site in 1976 and was soon converted into an open space and car park in 1987. The rest garden is built on a terrace at the top of a slope, consisting of two connecting small piazzas with a height difference of approximately 70 cm. At the high ground on the east side is a pavilion and fitness equipment for the elderly, while the circular space on the west side has a round shade pavilion and children’s play facilities. From both east and west, visitors can overlook the valley and take in the view of the villages. As a rest garden embedded in a car park, it has transformed infrastructure into a community-serving public space and increased recreational needs for the community. It keeps the bus-waiting environmental cool and fresh, while improving the traffic mobility.
