Reclamation Street Sitting-out Area
Reclamation Street was formed after the reclamation of Kowloon Peninsula’s western shore in 1880. Given that the reclamation was constructed by prisoners sentenced to penal labour, it was originally named ‘Punishment Street’ or tsing-gai-gai in Chinese. It was renamed as Reclamation Street in 1910 when the government attempted to update street names in Kowloon. The sitting-out area formed a square space located between two tenement buildings. Residents have installed a few chairs and a fish tank near the entry, and several palm trees were planted in the sitting-out area, alongside arbours and chess tables.
