Shantung Street Sitting-out Area

Shandong Street is one of the streets named after Chinese provinces and cities. It was near the location of the now-demolished Mong Kok Ferry Pier, which dates back to the 1940s. Before the Great Eagle Group redeveloped Shandong Street, the sitting-out area was known as tzuek-tsai-gai, meaning ‘Bird Street’, and was a gathering place for caged bird enthusiasts during the 1960s and 1970s. The sitting-out area has two levels and is located next to Langham Place’s Cordis hotel. The lower level includes various plant species and benches. The upper level, which is connected to the hotel, has elderly fitness equipment and a children’s playground. The two levels are connected by a spiral staircase and a ramp. The uniqueness of this sitting-out area lies in how similar its design is to Langham Place, as well as its use of various materials. People may have believed the space was private if there not been signage from the Leisure and Cultural Services Department indicating its status as a sitting-out area.
