Sheung Yue River Sitting-out Area

Sheung Yue River was originally named "River Beas" in English. In the early 20th century, to administer the outer layer of the New Territories, the British Hong Kong government dispatched an Indian surveyor to survey and map the rivers in the northern New Territories. At the time, as no English name was given, the Indian River Beas was adopted instead. The intersecting Shek Sheung River also adopted the name of the River Beas’s distributary—“River Sutlej”. The Sheung Yue River Sitting-Out Area is located on the flat land where Sheung Yue River and Shek Sheung River intersects, at the northeast corner of the Long Valley’s wetlands. The boundary of the retaining wall along the river channel has four sets of shaded arbours facing different directions of the river channel. In the centre of the site is a Chinese square pavilion, lifted by earth mounds planted with Hibiscus. The bottom of the pavilion is surrounded by a two-meter-high flower wall and a footpath. Visitors can observe the two meandering rivers, the breeding of migratory birds, as well as the distant scenery of the Shenzhen-Hong Kong border. It has become a good resting place for cyclists along the NT Bicycle Networks Yuen Long to Sheung Shui Section.
