Tai Po Market Rest Garden

The Tai Po Market Triangle is a triangular area bounded by Tsing Yuen Street, Wai Yan Street and On Fu Road. The site was first converted into a park for the villagers in the 1920s by the then North District Government by backfilling the marshes. From the late 1940s onwards, the park developed into a concentration of hawker stalls in the market until it was destroyed by a fire in March 1966, which affected the transformer in the centre of the site and caused a power failure in Tai Po. In October of the same year, the Government rebuilt the Rest Garden and restored the transformer which has been in operation ever since. A traditional Chinese tower of red bricks and green tiles sits at the centre, with a low flowerbed that serves also as a seating area around the garden boundary. Several improvements have been made to the site, including the addition of a pavilion, benches and a minibus terminus to make it more convenient for waiting passengers. In the midst of dense cluster of buildings, the Rest Garden is a cherished space for residents to interact with each other, preserving and perpetuating local cultures and memories.
