Cheung Chau Praya Street Sitting-out Area

In the late 1950s, in order to build the new Cheung Chau Pier, the government reclaimed land along the waterfront street, creating what is now the San Hing Praya Street—the busiest and most bustling street in Cheung Chau. Completed in 1998, it is located at the junction of Praya Street and San Hing Praya Street, surrounded by stalls selling shrimp paste, salted fish and other local products, as well as open-air cafes and seafood stalls. The triangular-shaped site occupies only 50 square metres and has a simple layout. It only consists of only three prefabricated shelters, seats facing Cheung Chau Wan, and a triangular planter. The area is filled with parked bicycles from the neighbourhood, and surrounded by various billboards, signs, light boxes and even seafood restaurant freezers, turning it into an informal local tourist information station. In the evening, passers-by can enjoy the sunset and the sea breeze, being immersed in the buzz of the crowd.
