Guilford Road Rest Garden

GuIlford Road is a dead-end road on Mount Gough in the Peak area, south of Peak Road, and is one of the lowest-altitude roads in the Peak district. At the southern end of the road is the GuIlford Road Rest Garden, which was opened in 1975. In its early years, five circular observation decks on the hillside provided views of Hong Kong’s Southern District and South China Sea. However, as the years went by, the views were blocked by the trees and the rest garden was hidden in the greenery. In 1992, due to the campus expansion of the German Swiss International School, the entrance to the rest garden was converted from a long staircase connecting to GuIlford Road to a Z-shaped ramp, while the northernmost platform was removed and replaced with a Chinese style paifang. The four observation decks vary in size and has a maximum height difference of 14 metres. They have wooden verandas or pavilions and are connected to each other by staircases and ramps. The tall Melaleuca cajuputi subsp. cumingiana, Celtis sinensis and Cinnamomum camphora provide shade and diversify the scenery along the path, reminding the visitors the site’s original condition as a primary woodland.
