Ka Wai Man Road Sitting-out Area

After World War II, the Tung Wah Smallpox Hospital, established in 1901, was demolished. The site was converted into facilities such as Yat Pit Pavilion, Bagdad College, and a garden. The Sai Wan Estate was completed in 1958 at the western end of Kennedy Town, on the hillside behind Bagdad College. To facilitate vehicular access, the then-existing hilly track was transformed into a road leading from the centre of Sai Wan Estate to Victoria Road of about 38 metres in vertical distance. In 1960, after the completion of the SKH Lui Ming Choi Memorial Primary School and the Kennedy Town Police Quarters, the road was widened and named Ka Wai Man Road. Since 1994, the government started to fill the space between the sidewalk and eight Cinnamomum camphora trees growing on the slope to the north of the road with pavilions, seats and other facilities, forming the sitting-out area’s current state. The 8 towering and densely foliated Cinnamomum camphora casts a shadow over the slope, where the lush greenery is in sharp contrast to the hardwood pavilions and the concrete retaining slope. As you walk up the slope from the roadside entrance, you can experience the sudden transition from heavy traffic to a green and lively space.
