Pottinger Street, also known as Stone Slabs Street, is a Grade I historic building in Hong Kong and is popular with tourists because it retains the characteristic Hong Kong style of stall shops. Prior to 1983, the area around Lok Hing Lane on the eastern side of Pottinger Street Central was occupied by tenement buildings, which were demolished and converted into a retaining slope and sitting-out area. At the turn of the century, the Government started to implement the Tourism District Enhancement Programme and has included this sitting-out area as part of the scheme. It was re-planned, redesigned and built between 2001 and 2003 to provide a more convenient link between Pottinger Street and Lan Kwai Fong, and has been the setting for many Hong Kong films and television dramas. The new sitting-out area mediates the 12-metre difference in height between Pottinger Street and Wo On Lane with a five-stage fan-shaped platform, and four bright red shelters along the side of Pottinger Street, making it an eye-catching and photographic feature of the street. The amphitheatre located at the entrance to Wo On Lane provides a venue for many arts and cultural activities. The sunken open plaza creates a strong contrast with the surrounding high-rise buildings, creating a moment of tranquillity amidst the hustle and bustle of the city.
