Aberdeen Boulder’s Corner Rest Garden
The rest garden is located at the southern end of Aberdeen Old Main Street, on a rocky outcrop at the foot of the slope leading to the Old Aberdeen Police Station. Before the reclamation of the Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter in the 1980s, the site was the high point of the waterfront and was built as a rest garden in 1992. The garden is perched on a rocky terrain, forming four small platforms of varying heights with views of the Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter and Ap Lei Chau across the water. On both sides of the ramp at the garden entrance, are mini temples dedicated to various deities such as Kwun Yum, Tai Wong Yeh, Supreme Emperor of the Dark Heaven, Kwan Tai (Gwan Yu), Lord of the Ground and Goddess of the Sea. There are also large and small statues placed on the retaining slope. As Aberdeen was once an important fishing and shipbuilding area, there used to be many Tanka dwellers in the area, where fishing boats and sampans moored. The century-old “mini temple cluster” allow fishermen of all beliefs to pray for blessings before they set sail. This custom perpetuates and “mini temple cluster” is preserved in the rest garden.
