Stanley New Street / Stanley Village Road Sitting-Out Area
The sitting-out area occupies a triangular-shaped slope formed by Stanley Village Road and Stanley New Street. Due to the height difference of about 6.5 metres between the two roads, a staircase was added to the south side of the slope in 1975 to allow villagers in Stanley Bay to easily reach the Stanley Village Road bus stop. As the slope was originally occupied by pipes of Stanley’s water supply system, small platforms are created along the edge of the main and the bottom of the slope, totalling 114 square metres. Diverse types of vegetations grow on the slope, including canopy trees that shade the seating areas on the platforms at the periphery of the site. Along the slope is one of Hong Kong’s Old and Valuable Trees, a large Casuarina equisetifolia of 1.5 metres trunk diameter. Colourful trees and shrubs such as Ixora chinensis Lam., Allamanda cathartica, Duranta repens, Macaranga tanarius, and Dimocarpus longan embellish the retaining slopes and define the chrematistics of this sitting-out area.
