Nam On Street Sitting-out Area

In the 1970s, the Eastern Corridor was proposed and planned to accommodate the population development of Hong Kong Island East and to connect it to the heart of Hong Kong Island. Part of Aldrich Bay was reclaimed for the construction of Phase II (Section between Taikoo Shing and Shau Kei Wan) of the expressway. In 1985, to commemorate and celebrate the completion and opening of Phase II, an opening ceremony was held and officiated by the Acting Governor Sir David Akers-Jones at Aldrich Bay Amenity Areas, which was completed by the former Urban Council around the same time. The ceremony memorial plaque is preserved in this small garden, which was renamed Nam On Street Sitting-out Area in 2006. The open space is an equilateral triangle-shaped garden with two circular sunken piazzas interlocked in the southern section of the site, sandwiched between the footbridge staircases. One of the piazzas is semi-enclosed by a 3-metre-high wall installed to reduce the noise of the adjacent bus terminus, while ensuring safety and privacy. Wide aisles span on both sides outside the piazzas with long benches along the way to better circulate crowds to and from the bus terminus and MTR station.
