Lei King Wan Sitting-out Area

Originally part of the western Aldrich Bay, Lei King Wan was reclaimed in phases from the late 1970s to the 1980s and acquired by Swire Properties for a large private residential development. The Lei King Wan Sitting-out Area, semi-enclosed by the Phase 4 residential area, was opened in 1989 with a site covering 4,600 square metres to provide a large open space for the surrounding residents. A large cross-shaped walkway divides the site into four parts, with several entrances and exits to the surrounding estate buildings and streets. Four parts are filled by an open piazza, an enclosed children’s play area, planting beds and tree lines—a display of simple geometric aesthetics. Diverse landscape elements are arranged along the central axis of the sitting-out area. These include a cascading waterfall tiled with orange-coloured tesserae near the entrance, two modernist waffle ceiling square pavilions and a triangular pavilion located in the centre and north-east corner of the site. These structures enhance a strong spatial and axial relationship, and create places in the sitting-out area to relax and cool off.
