Castle Peak Road / Ching Cheung Road Rest Garden

At the beginning of Hong Kong’s industrialization in the 1960s, in order to connect Kwun Tong Industrial Area and Kwai Chung Container Terminals, the government constructed two new roads along the hillsides of the mountains of Kowloon. Ching Cheung Road, a section between Lai Chi Kok and west of Tai Wo Ping was named to imply “Lun Tsz Ching Cheung”, a poetic expression of Hong Kong Governor Sir David Clive Crosbie Trench’s Chinese name “Tai Lun Tsz”. This rest garden is located at the southwest corner of the junction of Castle Peak Road and Ching Cheung Road Flyover. It was initially a vacant leftover on a hill southeast of Mei Foo Sun Chuen during the junction’s construction in 1970, which was then converted into a rest garden in the early 1980s. The design of the rest garden is similar to that of an English courtyard. A hexagonal pavilion at the west end overlooking Lai Chi Kok and Mei Foo, the meandering trails seemingly loosely laid out, and wild chrysanthemums and miscanthus growing on both sides from mid-leg up to waist height. A 6-metre-tall electric switch room at the entrance also has a rough appearance, covered with vermilion-brown creature-like papier-mâché, becoming the centre of attention.
