Berwick Street Sitting-out Area
Berwick Street divides Sham Shui Po and Shek Kip Mei. Located on a slope at the northern end of Berwick Street, the Berwick Street Sitting-out Area occupies a terraced triangular-shaped land, extending from Garden Hill’s southern foothill to the corner between Saviour Lutheran School and Mei Ho House. The sitting-out area is designed as a five-level setback due to the steep terrain and Berwick Street on its east. On each level are trapezoidal or parallelogram-shaped flowerbeds, whereas the topmost three levels have shaded corridors and pavilions. On the west end is a concrete retaining slope facing Mei Ho House. The 1990-built sitting-out area witnessed historical events of Shek Kip Mei Estate’s demolition and reconstruction, as well as the reconstruction and revitalisation of the only remaining H-shaped resettlement project, namely, Mei Ho House. Now, looking west from the pavilion, the sitting-out area can only silently watch the demise of the Garden Centre, another historical landmark in Sham Shui Po.
