In the 1970s, Tuen Mun was reclaimed and developed into a new town. The reclamation narrowed most of Castle Peak Bay into a man-made river, while the Tuen Mun Estuary originally from Pui To Road to Hau Kok Tin Hau Temple was moved south, where the current form of the Tuen Mun Nullah gradually took shape. The rest garden was built in 1978 as a post-reclamation resting promenade. The promenade spans 300 metres along the coastline, used as a barrier between the river and adjacent industrial land. With the opening of Tuen Mun Station of the KCR West Rail (now Tuen Ma Line) in 2003, the rest garden was rebuilt in 2007 to its present appearance. The northern end is the Transport Department’s public bicycle parking space with an elevated railway, while the west side borders at New Territories Cycle Track. In the rest garden, three large planting beds and fitness stations organise its layout, with gazebos, seats and scattered trees along the river. Two installations under the “Viva! River” public art scheme are also placed at the northern entrance. The installations are vibrant, eye-catching, and forming a place for the public to rest, relax, exchange ideas and be creative. Since the 1980s, the water quality of the Tuen Mun Nullah has greatly improved thanks to the monitoring and improvements by government departments and the District Council. A wetland-like habitat has formed in the berthing from the central to the southern part of the rest garden, where water birds often come seeking for food, a symbol of the site’s liveliness.
