In 1902, Tai Po Road, the first highway in the New Territories, was opened to meet the needs of military deployment and new land development at that time, connecting various districts in the New Territories with urban Kowloon. Along Tai Po Road, there are several milestones to represent the distance from Tsim Sha Tsui Pier. The 7 ½ mile marker is located in the Tai Wai section of the road, near the restaurant Shatin Inn. In 2003, to relieve east-west traffic in the New Territories, construction of the Tsing Sha Highway began, with the elevated section in Sha Tin (then known as “Sha Tin Trunk Road T3”) crossing over the Tai Wai section of Tai Po Road. Due to the construction of T3, the original site of Chik Wan Street Rest Garden was demolished and relocated to the current site in 2010, alongside the 7 ½ Mile Stone which gave the rest garden its name. The rest garden is located on the hillside terrace below the flyover linking the TPR-Sha Tin Height and TPR-Tai Wai of Tai Po Road, above the tunnel entrance of Tsing Sha Highway. The Rest Garden has layered tree ponds along the terrain, planted with many Delonix regia and Archontophoenix alexandrae. It is also equipped with a Western style round pavilion viewing the Mei Lam Estate and Tao Fong Shan. Sound absorbing surfaces are applied to the walls located near the highway, making the garden a quiet and hidden oasis amongst endless flows of traffic.
