In the 1980s, the Sai Kung area became increasingly popular with tourists, in particular Silverstrand Beach becoming known for its water quality, city proximity and accessibility. Since then, over 600 detached villas, holiday homes and hotels have been built along the hillside of the bay over the years. In 1989, the Government converted a terraced site of about 580 square metres on the slope between Silver Cape Road and Silverstrand Mart into a sitting-out area. The site is dominated by a V-shaped walkway in accordance with the topography to connect Silver Cape Road to the east, and the plaza-side long staircase to the west of the sitting-out area. The V-shaped walkway forms a triangular-shaped slope occupied a rich variety of shrubs and trees such as Bidens biternata, Clerodendrum cyrtophyllum, Crinum asiaticum, and Bauhinia variegata, collectively creating a three-dimensional greenery to suit the terrain. With its minimalist design and efficient engineering, this sitting-out area celebrates the seaside atmosphere where residents can always find a place to relax under the shade of trees and by the long grass.
