After World War II, the Cooperative for American Remittances to Europe (CARE) entered Hong Kong in 1956, mainly to build fishing villages and distribute supplies in Cheung Chau and the New Territories to assist Hong Kong people. Until the 1970s, as the social environment gradually improved, most of the CARE donations were used to build rural infrastructure, such as seawalls, roads and community centres. In 1977, CARE built the CARE U.S.A. & Canada Playground & Rest Garden east of Wo Mei Village, on a hilltop along the Hiram’s Highway, to improve the area’s recreational and living conditions. With the opening of the New Hiram’s Highway, the traffic flow passing by the rest garden has been greatly reduced. Alongside the dense greenery acting as a noise barrier, the site has become a hidden and tranquil place for stress relief. The open lawn is surrounded by trees, with only one pavilion stands at the northeast corner of the garden. Since its establishment, the official name of the rest garden has been changed several times. Its name was first shortened and changed to “Wo Mei Rest Garden”, in which “Mei” (美) was used to memorize aid from the United States (美國). While the English name stays, the Chinese name was further revised in 2000, replacing “美” with “尾” for “Mei” to tone down the American influences in the region. Nevertheless, a stone plaque inscribed with the rest garden’s original name persists on site until today.
