Most of the sitting-out areas in urban settings are generally located at the corners of intersecting streets or in gaps between buildings. However, this sitting-out area spans the parallel streets of Tai Nam Street and Lai Chi Kok Road. The sitting-out area forms an ‘L’ shape and is divided into two by an alley of sundries. The eastern part facing Lai Chi Kok Road centres around a low and staggered square pavilion, forming alternating patterns with tall Ficus microcarpa. On the other hand, the west end of the sitting-out area facing Tai Nan Street is sandwiched between residential buildings. Zigzag-shaped tree planting beds obstruct openness, making the space appear small. The square pavilion is also occupied by the homeless. A sharp contrast between large and small, and open and enclosed can be observed in two parts of this sitting-out area.
